(As seen on CBS2 Chicago)
The New Year is here and it’s time for many people to consider the changes they’d like to make for 2008. Every year, my patients comment that their New Year goals are to look and feel better - yet many often make unrealistic or even impossible resolutions. The key to sticking to resolutions and achieving the ultimate goal of looking and feeling great is to set simple, attainable everyday goals. Achieving realistic targets will provide the motivation to continue with resolutions long after the New Year has passed.
Through years of helping clients achieve various health & beauty goals, I have developed the following Top 10 Everyday Health & Beauty Resolutions that will help all women focus on getting their health, mind, body and confidence in the shape they’ve always wanted:
Get Active: Physical activity decreases stress, increases energy, and burns calories – but if you chain yourself to the gym you may burn out. Try to do something active 3-4 times per week, even if it means dancing in the living room for 20 minutes.
Moderation in Dieting: Women can make extremely difficult New Year’s diet resolutions. If you never allow yourself to eat treats after NYE, you are set up to fail. Instead, allow yourself to eat dessert on the weekends, and practice moderation in quantity.
Complete Necessary Health Exams: It is important to consistently do pap smears, mammograms, and test for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, depression, sexually transmitted diseases, and Osteoporosis after age 65. Make it a part of your routine and it won’t seem to daunting
Integrate Organic: Slowly incorporating organic products into you daily lives will have a tremendous impact on your health and well-being. Start with some vegetables or basic groceries and then perhaps consider hair care, skin care and make ups. They don’t include harmful chemicals and leave you looking naturally radiant.
Take Your Vitamins: In addition to numerous health benefits, taking daily multivitamins combats stress, energizes the body and boosts physical and mental health. Feeling good is the first step to looking great!
Get Your Calcium: Be sure to eat three servings a day. Not only does calcium strengthen the bones and protect the heart and body against various critical health conditions, it also improves premenstrual moods and maintains healthy looking teeth. Beauty radiates from the smile so show off those pearly whites!
Take Care of Your Skin: Stress, cold weather, and time can do a number on the resilience of your skin. Exfoliate regularly to combat dry, flaky skin; moisturize daily to prevent wrinkles and firm the skin; and for special occasions, consider tinted moisturizers or body shimmers. When you’re skin glows, you glow!
Drink Plenty of Water: Water is the fountain of youth! Drinking 8 cups her day helps internal organs function properly, keeps the immune system healthy and flushes out waste and toxins. It also aids in achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight, increases energy and keeps the skin hydrated – keep up the fluids for overall health and to ensure your skin looks fresh healthy and glowing!
Pamper Yourself: Each and every woman deserves to spoil themselves so take time to indulge in beauty treatments such as a massage, a photo facial, a Botox treatment, or even just a simple mani-pedi. You will leave feeling replenished, rejuvenated and much more confident within yourself.
Make Time for You: Balance is the key to eliminating day to day stress, and women need to take time for themselves to avoid feeling overloaded. Understand that the task list can wait, and even 10 minutes to yourself a day will make you considerably happier. Looks will show!
Consider these daily health and beauty rituals and you will be looking and feeling your best in no time. The important thing is to believe in your natural beauty - The happiest, healthiest people have a positive outlook on who they are and what they project to the world.
10 Ways to Look 10 Years Younger in 20 Minutes or Less!
I know this may sound just too good to be true – 10 simple, quick and easy non-surgical solutions that can actually prevent aging in mere minutes? - We’ll believe me it’s not.
I’m passionate about helping women (and men for that matter) feel better about themselves and these easy, non-surgical tricks work a charm. People can now feel their best, without heading into the operating room and the following top ten techniques are guaranteed to yield stunning results.
1. Add volume with a Cheekbone Lift
It may sounds extreme, but it’s really quite simple. As we age, our face becomes square and loses the sexy shape and definition it once had. You can add volume to your cheekbones and lift the entire face while also reducing the appearance of wrinkles, jowls and nasolabial folds. It is an easy, simple process that involves Radiesse or Perlane injections in the cheekbone area, and better still, it only needs to be performed once a year! (Time: 10-15 minutes)
2. Eliminate lipstick wrinkle lines
Also known as “smoking lines”, many women find that lipstick can run from the lip line to the facial area with fine vertical-like wrinkles. A quick and simple Botox treatment can eliminate these lipstick runs, define the lines of the outer lips, and keep lips wrinkle-free. Pucker up ladies; it’s time to show off that sexy pout. (Time: 5 minutes)
3. Tighten pores and skin while reducing redness
For overall facial rejuvenation, deep penetrating lasers are key. They reach deep within the upper dermis to restore tautness to the skin and decrease pore size by spurring collagen production. A skin rejuvenation laser treatment can also reduce roseacea by treating dilated capillaries and give your face and neck a creamy, healthy complexion. Enjoy that youthful glow! (Time: 15-20 minutes)
4. Lift the brows
As you age, the brows begin to fall and remove the youthful, doe-eyed look in your face. Rather than visit the operating room for a facelift, you can fix droopy brows with strategic Botox injections three times per year. These simple, painless solutions lift brows back to where they were years ago. (Time: 5-10 minutes)
5. Bring eyes out of the shadows
As we age, we also tend to lose volume in the face. This can cause the tear trough, (an area beginning in the inner corner of your eye and extending to the under eye) to go “dry” and create a sunken in appearance. In mere minutes, you can eliminate this hollow appearance and add volume with two simple Restylane injections once a year. (Time: 5-10 minutes)
6. Show off smooth and supple hands
Believe it or not, you can now add volume and youth back to your hands and show off your sparkly gems without fear! A simple Radiesse treatment to the forehand can smooth wrinkles and decrease the appearance of veins. (Time: 10 minutes)
7. Reduce fine lines, acne scars and exfoliate
Microdermabrasion can melt away fine wrinkles, reduce acne scars and remove dead skin cells with each treatment. A device works as a fine sandblaster that sprays tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin and reveal the healthier cells underneath. It really is an effortless way to achieve a radiant complexion. (Time: 15-20 minutes)
8. Remove neck bands
Keep the focus on your beautiful face by getting rid of bands on the neck area - lines around the neck that develop over the years result in the overall appearance of “turkey neck.” A quick Botox treatment can prevent muscles and skin from forming unappealing lines, with treatments only necessary three times per year.
(Time: 10 minutes)
9. Plump up your pout
Restore the volume that has been lost in your pout with a Juvederm treatment that can define the outer lines of the lips, plump the upper and lower lip, and give you the lips you once had 5-10 years before. Your lips will look natural, full, and irresistible! (Time: 15 minutes)
10. Get rid of sun and age spots
Remove spots on your face, chest, back, hands, legs and more with a Solar Genesis laser rejuvenation treatment. A relaxing laser warms the skin and removes the appearance of spots and is safe for use anywhere on the body. Simple and soothing. (Time: 10 minutes)
There really are so many simple solutions that can make people feel much more confident within themselves often improving their personal and professional lives. The idea with many of these non-invasive techniques is to achieve a natural, looking appearance and simply enhance your existing beauty. Who said you can’t turn back the hands of time?
Face Sculpting? Not as Scary as it Sounds
September 26, 2007
Achieving a youthful appearance is not as expensive or as invasive as you might think. Thanks to the latest dermal fillers, people of any age can now look rejuvenated and revitalized. Radiesse®, Juvederm® and Restylane® are the most recently released dermal fillers on the market, and they each yield fantastic results. However, there are subtle differences between the three:
- Radiesse® is a dermal filler that fills wrinkles around the mouth and nose areas. Radiesse® can also be used to fill scars and erase the appearance of wound tissue. Radiesse® is composed of calcium-based microspheres that are found naturally in the skin. It actually stimulates the skin to create collagen, which helps produce skin elasticity and smoothness. There is no recovery time associated with Radiesse®, and patients can return home just moments after the procedure. One of the main advantages of Radiesse® is that the effects can last for 12-18 months.
- Juvederm® is a gel compromised of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the skin. A person will see results almost immediately if the filler is injected to increase fullness and resolve wrinkles. Juvederm® used ideally in the lips, and it is different from other hyaluronic acid gels as it has the highest concentration of acid that is allowed by the FDA. It also has a smoother consistency than other products. Effects of this procedure last 6 months.
- Restylane® is the most popular hyaluronic acid filler on the market. In addition to achieving natural results, Restylane® spurs collagen production in the body. Collagen is a protein in the body that adds elasticity, volume, and tautness in the skin. With consistent treatments, the body will continue to produce additional collagen, reducing the need for additional visits. Restylane® primarily adds volume to creases and wrinkles, and it can even be used to create cheekbones. Results generally last for 6 months, after which time it is slowly absorbed by the body naturally.
These dermal fillers have created amazing opportunities in the field of non-invasive cosmetic surgery. For example, a qualified physician can now fill in the patient’s “jowls,” which will create a smoother, more contoured jaw line. Physicians can also lift and replace volume to the cheekbones, which is an ideal procedure for patients who have experienced a “droop” in their face from aging. These dermal fillers can also be used to soften the “nasolabial” folds (the fold between the nose and lip), which can restructure fullness that was lost to aging. The products can also be placed in the corner of the eyes—called the tear trough—which occurs with aging.
It is important to note that not every doctor can perform these volume-enhancing techniques effectively. It requires medical knowledge, an artistic nature, and a complete understanding of the patient’s facial muscles and the aging process of the face. Without this knowledge, it is impossible to know where and how to place the fillers—for instance, some fillers are placed deep into the skin, while others are more superficial. It is crucial to look at every person individually in order to best to create a natural and youthful appearance, and to have the knowledge and experience of using these products effectively.
Achieving the Arch
Brow Lift - September 26, 2007
Brow lifts are swiftly gaining popularity throughout the nation, perhaps because there are now so many non-invasive options available to patients. People who previously balked at the expensive cost and extensive recovery time associated with surgical brow lifts can now achieve the same wrinkle-free brow with Botox™. Fortunately, Botox™ is both reasonably priced and time efficient…for some, it can be as simple as a lunchtime procedure.
A brow lift can be performed by a qualified Botox™ physician. The Botox™ is placed between the eyebrows, above the nose, and to the outer part of the eyebrows. This causes the major muscle in the forehead to lift the eyebrows and create an arch in the brow. It also prevents skin from sagging into the eye, otherwise known as the “droopy eye” look. Unlike surgery, Botox™ stops movement of the muscles that pull down the brow, which prevents frown lines and worry wrinkles. Thus, not only does Botox™ reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it actually causes the muscles to create a natural-looking arch.
The small injections can last up to four months, but when used regularly after the first year, the injections only need to occur once every six months, and 20% less Botox™ is needed. Remember, the goal is to create a natural-looking arch, not a frozen forehead.
For those who need to add volume in addition to lift the brow, I recommend the dermal filler Restylane. Any hollow areas surrounding the eyes can be filled to add volume to the face in addition to youth in the brow. The effects of Restylane last six months.
Using both Botox and Restylane, it is also possible to contour the arch of the brow to frame the face more precisely. This is a wonderful opportunity for those without a significant brow line to add more of an arch and angle to their brow. Eyes always make the most significant impression - I have seen faces transform in mere minutes to fit an individual’s true personality rather than the misleading appearance age has given them.
There are many options available to you, but these advanced minimally-invasive treatments should only be performed by an experienced physician. Always discuss their experience with the procedure in detail and ask to see examples of their work.
