Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

Dilation means stretching the opening of the cervix with special instruments to make it wider.  Once the opening of the cervix is enlarged, another instrument is inserted into the uterus to loosen and remove the lining of the uterus.  This is called curettage. After a D&C is performed, a new lining will build up in the uterus during the next menstrual cycle.  Whenever a woman has abnormal bleeding from the vagina, there is a concern.  A D&C may be needed to find out what the problem is or to treat it.  This procedure is generally done in the hospital under general anesthesia, so that the patient’s body is relaxed and it is easier to examine the uterus and nearby organs.  After the surgery, the doctor will probably permit you to return home accompanied by a friend or relative a few hours afterward.  You may be groggy or weak for a few hours from the anesthesia.  These effects wear off at different times for different people.  You should be back to your normal activities within a day or two.  Intercourse and using tampons should be refrained for about a week so that the cervix can return to a normal size.  You should be back to your normal activities within a day or two. Intercourse and using tampons should be refrained for about a week so that the cervix can return to a normal size, since during this time you may be more prone to infections.
